Don’t Limit the Colors in Your Wardrobe (If You Don’t Want To)

Note: I’ve written a similar post to this before, but I’ve learned a bit more since then. So basically this is an updated version.

When you have a lot of clothes, it’s somewhat easy to have a large variety of colors represented in your wardrobe and still be able to create at least one outfit with every piece. When you only have one outfit possibility from a certain piece of clothing, though, it’s pretty easy to forget about wearing it.

With a smaller wardrobe, it’s a lot more important to think about the outfit possibilities each item will provide. You’ll find many minimalists on the Internet that chose to cut out color when they decluttered their wardrobe. And then there are some who choose a very specific color palette for their wardrobe, meaning they only ever wear two or three colors.

It’s still possible to add a variety of colors in a small wardrobe, though. You just have to put a little more thought into it. Here are a few tips for doing just that.

Add color through one type of item. In other words, only get colorful shirts while keeping your pants neutral, or vice versa. This will give you the ability to come up with a variety of outfits and wear a variety of colors. Black pants or blue jeans can be matched with just about any color you want, including black and blue.

Play with prints. A lot of times, prints include a variety of colors, meaning you could pair two or three different solid colors with that one piece. Just make sure when you’re getting something like this that you think through some of those outfit possibilities. Make sure you already have items that will work with that piece, instead of having to purchase something else to create a full outfit.

Add color with accessories. You can choose to add color almost exclusively through the accessories you wear, such as scarves or hats. This is a great way to take essentially the exact same outfit and mix it up multiple times. The downside with this one is that it could lead to you adding a lot more accessories than you would have otherwise. Make sure you avoid going over the top in this area.

Choose colorful socks and/or underwear. I know this is kind of a weird one, but hear me out. If you choose to go the route of eliminating most colors from your wardrobe, this can be a fun way for you to still include some color. Wear some colorful socks with your black-and-gray outfit, or keep some color hidden under that same outfit. Either way, you’ll be able to include color in a less obvious way.

Think about what you already own before adding anything new. I know I’ve already mentioned this a couple times in this post, but that’s just how important it is. In any wardrobe, you should be able to make multiple outfits with any piece of clothing, and it’s especially important with a small wardrobe. You should be able to wear each piece multiple ways. That’s how you’ll get the most use out of your small wardrobe. You’ll be able to make a variety of outfits because most items will match each other.
