Buy Experiences, Not Things

If you’re trying to declutter your life and purchase less items, then you’re doing a lot less casual shopping. And if this was previously one of your go-to activities, you might be having a hard time figuring out what to do for fun instead.

Here are a few ways you can still go out and have fun without adding more clutter into your life. Some of these require a bit more planning than others, but these ideas will help you get started in thinking about what you can do with your extra time and money.

Take a road trip. Get a couple friends together and get away for a day, a weekend, or even a week. You don’t have to go far. Even if there’s a city just a few hours away that you’ve been wanting to go to, plan it out and have an advetnure together. While you’re there, see the sights, but avoid bringing home a bunch of new souvenirs. You can hold onto the pictures you take while you’re there as souvenirs or pick out one small item to remember the trip by.

Go to a spa. Treat yourself to some relaxation. If you have the money to splurge on yourself, treat yourself to a day at the spa so you can get pampered. It’ll be a relaxing experience, and you won’t regret doing it.

Mark something off of your bucket list. Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but you either haven’t had teh time or the money? Now that you’re saving money by spending less, you can save up to take that trip to Europe, go skydiving, or see that Broadway musical.

Go out to dinner with friends. I know this sounds really basic, but sometimes we try too hard to come up with something creative to do with friends when really all we should be doing is spending some quality time together. So get a group of friends together or just get together with one friend you haven’t seen in a while and go out to dinner.

Host a game night. On a similar note, if you’re all trying to save money, you can stay in instead. Have everyone bring their favorite board or card game, and spend the evening playing those games together. You can also have everyone bring a snack so you have something to munch on as well.

These are just a few things you can try out. They’re all experiences that you’ll be able to hold onto as wonderful memories without adding more clutter to your life. Let me know if you try any of these out or have a few ideas of your own. I’d love to hear about it.
