My Approach to Books and Reading

I’ve always been a bit of a bookworm. And I’ve always loved going to the bookstore to find something new to read. That’s why I found it surprising that it was so easy for me to get rid of a lot of my books when I started decluttering. I wasn’t as attached to them as I had originally thought.

Since decluttering my book collection, there are a few new habits I’ve formed when it comes to reading and bringing new books into my life.

I borrow books from the library more often. Instead of going to the bookstore every time I’m looking for something new to read, I check the library first. It’s  a great way to save money and to keep from accumulating too many books. (I also sometimes borrow books from my brother.)

I use my e-reader more often. This happens most often when I’m traveling. Instead of worrying about how many books I should take, I just take my ereader. That way, even if I finish everything I planned on reading during the trip, there’s probably something else in my library I can read. I have a lot of classics on there, so that helped me declutter my physical copies. If I feel like rereading them I can always use the digital copies.

Yes, it can feel a little weird at first took read from an e-reader instead of from a paperback book, but it takes up less space and weight. Maybe someday I’ll solely read from my e-reader, but I’m definitely not there yet. (By the way, I own a nook. Personally, I love it, but it’s the only e-reader I’ve ever tried. It’s not like I can really compare it.)

I’m rereading the books I own. There are some books in my collection that I haven’t read in a really long time. I remember loving them the first time around, so now I’m rereading them. It’s been nice to revisit some of my favorite books and even have a bit of a different perspective on them. It’s also fun to see what I’ve underlined in books in the past.

I’m reading the books I own but never read before. Like I said before, I enjoy going to the bookstore. But sometimes that leads to buying way too many books and not finishing them all. So now I’m working my way through all the books I own and reading the ones I never got around to. So far, this is making me wonder why I hadn’t read these books before. Some were sitting on my shelf for way too long before I cracked them open.

What about you? Are you a bookworm like me? And if so, what’s your favorite way to bring books into your life?
