What Living Simply Means to Me

As you might have read on a previous post, I’ve decided I want to declutter and live more simply. However, this is something that I’m already struggling with, as I own a lot of things. There are a lot of objects I own that were gifted to me or that bring back special memories. Moreover, my love languages (It’s a tie) are gifts and quality time. My friends are aware of this, and every gift I receive is very precious to me.

Right now, my goal is to figure out which items actually bring me joy and/or serve a purpose in my life. I own a lot of art supplies – paper, notebooks, paint, brushes, etc. – because I’m an artsy person. These are all definitely things I intend to keep. I also hang up a lot of photos in my room. These make me smile when I’m down and remind me I have friends when I feel lonely. Obviously there’s a reason for me to keep those.

I think living simply won’t just be about owning less, though. That’s not entirely the point. When it comes to my physical belongings, I think the important thing is to figure out what brings me happiness or helps make my life simpler. It’s not just about owning less. It’s about owning things I truly value.

There are definitely physical things I need to get rid of, but there are also distractions in my life that I want to eliminate. I don’t know exactly what these are yet, but I’m figuring that out along the way. One thing I do know is that I want to spend more time creating than I do on social media or watching TV shows and movies. This is definitely going to be a hard one for me.

Overall, here are a few goals I want to accomplish in the next few weeks:

  1. Review all the items currently taking up space in my room. Decide whether to keep, toss, donate, or sell. Do accordingly.
  2. Spend less time on social media and more time on creative outlets.
  3. Read meaningful books and recommend my favorites to friends or family.
  4. Save more money by spending less. This means eating out less, buying less drinks from Starbucks, and overall only purchasing items I truly consider important.

I think this is a pretty good place to start. Hopefully by the end of September I’ll be done cleaning up my room (for now) and have some positive habits under my belt. As time goes on, I’ll be adjusting and adding some new goals as well.

If you’re working toward simplifying your life and decluttering, keep in mind that this process is slightly different for everyone. Feel free to adjust according to your own needs and preferences.

Have any suggestions for efficiently decluttering, saving money, etc.? Let me know in the comments!
